Should I take my puppy out for walks on the lead? NO. DEFINITELY NOT. DO NOT USE A LEAD AT ALL. STAY IN YOUR OWN GARDEN

PRAISE AND REWARD
Hold a small piece of food in your hand
Let your puppy lick the food treat and then move yur hand slowly upwards and backwards.
Their nose comes up and they automatically sit to keep their balance.
Say Sit ONCE, in a friendly but calm way as his bottom goes to the ground.
Give the puppy the food and praise him with your voice only.
RECALL
It is vital for your dog's safety and enjoyment that they return when you call them
WHISTLE

Why?
It gets the dogs attention with the high pitched sound
It always sound the same, so other members of hte family can use it
It never sounds angry
You can blow the whistle even if you have a sore throat!!
Two short toots on the whistle, repeated after a gap if necessary
Inside the house and in your garden. Increase the distance only when the puppy is immediately coming to you
Food reward immediately they come to you
HEEL (learning to follow you)
WHICH SIDE OF YOU WILL YOUR PUPPY WALK?

SAY 'HEEL' every time you take a step. Repeat HEEL every step
Decide which sider of you the puppy will walk on. Stick to that side
Hold a small piece of food in your hand. Let the puppy lick it but not take it
Move your hand to the side of your leg, and keep it there while the puppy licks the food.
Make sure your hand is low enough so that all four paws are on the ground
Take one small step forward, keeping your hand right by your leg
Give the puppy the food
Repeat, gradually increasing your steps up to FOUR steps
